* Saturnalia is the feast with which the Romans commemorated the dedication of the temple of the god Saturn, which was on December 17th. (nerd shit)

* Saturnalia became one of the most popular Roman festivals. It was marked by tomfoolery and reversal of social roles, in which slaves and masters ostensibly switched places, with expectedly humourous results.’ – wiki

* In addition we’ll be celebrating about 20 people’s birthdays, so it will be steeping with Saggitarian pride. Come join us!

* All canned goods will be sent to the First Presbyterian Church @ Symphony Circle so families can fill their tummys this holiday season.

SUNDAY, JUNE 20th
PATIO @ ENCORE

Circa 2000 – Buffalo, NY

By the turn of the millenium, the rave movement had made it’s way into the clubs and pubs, and a slew of sub-genres had evolved. There was the dark, big-bass nights, the psychedelic ravers, the hard-house clubs, etc. But in the shadows, there lurked another movement. One that focused on the deep & the soulful, the organic, the world-influenced. A pounding beat that could have come from an 808 or an ancient tribal gathering…no matter.

Deep Soul Plug (AKA Deepsoulplug) was part of that latter focus. Breakdancers, jazz-aficionados, house heads, hippies, clubbers, and the like…all with a common thirst. Held on Sunday nights on Buffalo’s lower west side at a little bar called RENDEZVOUS, DJ RHYMIC & partner DJ ZUK, found the original prohibition-era dive as the perfect venue. Deep Soul Plug Sundays became an institution for many. The patio nights were warm and the dance floor was hot. The focus of the night was house music, but the diversity factor of the audience played an equally, if not more important role.

So, after an 8 year (?) hiatus, and for ONE NIGHT ONLY the “original” Sunday night is back. We’re flying them in exclusively for this event, so we ask you show your support. As always, the party is FREE.

DEEP.SOUL.PLUG unites once again. The PATIO @ ENCORE is the spot. Spread the word…

DEEP SOUL PLUG IS:

DJ ZUK – Colorado

grayn.net/

DJ ZUK has since left Buffalo for the beautiful state of Colorado, collaborating with Musicians, Producers, DJ’s, Performing Artists, Independent Film Directors and Alternative Heath Practitioners, bridging the gap. Performing from Toronto to Hawaii and anywhere in between, providing the sounds of Deep House, Techno, World Music Fusions and Down-Tempo experimentals, with positive vibrations that follow. He diligently produces fantastic house music, currently releasing his original works on Communique Records.

RHYMIC – North Carolina

commonrootcooperative.com

Rhymic has since lived in San Fran, NYC, the Virgin Islands, and now currently resides in North Carolina. He’s quite the chef, even so far as a Sous Chef position for Bobby Fley’s Mesa Grill. Common Root Cooperative (Commonrootcooperative.com) is his latest project, aimed at unifying people through the exploration of the senses, with the belief that the beat of a drum or a taste on the tongue can have a profound experience.

ALOE BLACC

As heard on the theme song for HBO’s series “How To Make It In America”. Performing a sneak preview of his upcoming Stones Throw album “Good Things”, Produced by El Michels Affair in the vein of vein of Motown and Staxx.

So Cal native Aloe Blacc began his recording career as an MC back in 1995, when he joined up with hip-hop producer Exile to form the mainstay indie rap group, Emanon. A few years later, Aloe would stow away on a Lootpack European tour and become fast friends with Oh No a relationship which led to many fruitful collaborations as a solo artist.

These days, Aloe Blacc has evolved into a true Renaissance man. Recordings like his Latin cover of John Legends Ordinary People prove that not only can this multi-instrumentalist produce, rap and sing but he can flip it in Spanish, too. With an amazingly broad set of influences ranging widely from the acoustic guitar stylings of folk artist Cat Stevens, to the soul-stirring sounds of the Negro Spirituals, Aloe prides himself on the spectrum of his musical roots. His sound often forays into the digital R&B realm, but always grooves with a tinge of Latin and the pulse of hip-hop.

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY:
“I Need a Dollar.” It sounded like the type of thing you might discover deep in someone’s collection of old soul records on vinyl — maybe an obscure Bill Withers B-side we weren’t familiar with?

Fresh off several tours opening for New Deal, STS9, Lotus, Disco Biscuits, and with a slew of production from Alex B. (Pnuma Trio), Big Gigantic is quickly gaining serious recognition on the national party circuit. One thing Dominic Lalli (Motet saxophonist/producer) is not afraid of is trying new things. Big Gigantic is Lalli’s latest project that showcases an array of gripping composition combining elements of a DJ and a live band setup. Lalli and drummer Jeremy Salken mix thoughtful melodic ideas, with pulsating dance tunes, sure to energize the dance floor. Big Gigantic flavors the electronic music scene with powerful sax solos and soulful synth lines on top of super hot beats. Even in its early stages, Big Gigantic has played numerous sell out shows leaving audiences begging for more.

PREFUSE 73

http://www.prefuse73.com/

Prefuse 73 is the alias of Scott Herren, an experimental hip-hop producer whose material often features MCs buried in the mix to become more a part of the sonic texture than a focal point. Herren began his career working in commercial studios in Atlanta, but later went on to more experimental work. His first record under the Prefuse name, Vocal Studies + Uprock Narratives, not only buried but cut up and spliced raps as well as allowing some more straightforward vocals from several MCs. The 2003 follow-up, One Word Extinguisher, carried on in a similar vein. That same year, Warp released Extinguished: Outtakes — a fascinating EP of beats and samples that ran through 23 tracks in about 35 minutes.

Surrounded by Silence, the proper successor to One Word Extinguisher, was released in March of 2005, featuring collaborations with rappers Ghostface and Aesop Rock, plus Blonde Redhead and EL-P. Three months later, an EP of recordings made with the band the Books appeared, titled Reads the Books. The next Prefuse record, 2006’s Security Screenings, was relatively collaboration-free; it featured only two guests, Four Tet’s Kieran Hebden and Tunde Adebimpe from TV on the Radio. Preparations, featuring Battles drummer John Stanier on one track, followed in 2007, and Everything She Touched Turned Ampexian appeared in early 2009. Herren has also worked under his own name and that of Savath + Savalas and Delarosa & Asora. Geoff Orens, All Music Guide

THE GASLAMP KILLER

http://www.thegaslampkiller.com

The Gaslamp Killer is a Los Angeles-based DJ whose eclectic style ranges from psychedelia and world music to dubstep and left-field hip-hop. Associated with Flying Lotus’ Brainfeeder Records, he made his production debut in the late 2000s with a series of EPs. Born William Benjamin Bensussen, he originally comes from San Diego, CA, whose downtown Gaslamp District’s bar scene inspired him to name himself the Gaslamp Killer in disgust for much of the patronage. Upon relocating to Los Angeles, he found a niche for himself amid the city’s massive underground party scene and ultimately found a home for himself as a resident DJ at the club Low End Theory, which resulted in a series of club-sponsored podcasts. He also released a series of mix CDs, among them Gaslamp Killers (2007), It’s a Rocky Road (2007), I Spit on Your Grave (2008), Hell and the Lake of Fire Are Waiting for You! (2009), and All Killer (2009), the latter a label showcase for the London-based world psychedelia imprint Finders Keepers Records. As a producer, the Gaslamp Killer made his debut in the late 2000s, releasing, for instance, a split single with Free the Robots, “The Killer Robots,” on Obey Records in 2008 and an EP, My Troubled Mind, on Flying Lotus’ Brainfeeder Records in 2009.

“Really some of the best production I’ve heard in recent times” - AMON TOBIN

“Brendan Angelides, aka “Eskmo” is a San Francisco based producer & live performer. He currently has releases on Warp Records, Planet Mu, 1320, & Ancestor. He has been producing and performing live electronic music since 1999 and his sets are currently based around Ableton Live utilizing various midi controllers and FX running with on the spot warping, queing and key work. He has covered numerous styles throughout the years and it has grown to a fusion of thick,
floor-creaking bass layered with rich, oozing melodies and syncopated rhythms.

Eskmo has been featured in numerous publications and on such shows as BBC Radio 1 and RinseFM and has performed throughout the UK, into Spain, France and Canada. Aside from international bookings, he has performed in clubs, at theaters and at festivals in major cities across the US. He has shared the stage with notable acts such as Amon Tobin, Flying Lotus, Scuba, The Glitch Mob, Si Begg, Tipper and others.

In 2009, after years of releasing on various dance labels, Brendan started his own fully distributed digital label entitled “Ancestor”. The label was created to release his works and collaborative projects of all styles. The latest release aptly named “Hypercolor”, has helped him gain a new respect and awareness in wider circles. In May 2009, Boomkat rated the release #1 in a list of “14tracks” reflecting a new sound emerging along with Jamie Vexd, Joker, Zomby, Hudson Mohawke and others. He was subsequently contacted by Clash Magazine in the UK regarding an interview about the release as it jumped to the top 10 on sites like Beatport, Addictech and Digital Tunes.
